The Breakfast crew are perplexed by a suggestion from Bunnings that cooks hosting sausage sizzles outside their stores put the onions on the bottom for health and safety reasons.
It emerged yesterday that Bunnings in New Zealand and Australia had made a "friendly recommendation" to community groups that onions should be put on the bread before the sausage in a move aimed at reducing the risk of slips.
"This recommendation is provided to the community groups within their fundraising sausage sizzle welcome pack and is on display within the gazebos when barbeques are underway," chief executive Debbie Poole said.
Breakfast co-host Hayley Holt said the "rule" was stupid, but putting onions between the bread and sausage actually made sense.
"It keeps it all packed in nicely, in terms of getting it in your gob."
News reader Daniel Faitaua wasn't impressed, however.
"I just think, 'What's the world coming to?' This is just pathetic, in simple terms."
He wondered if Bunnings would soon made customers wear high-vis clothing, hard hats and steel-capped boots in-store.
"Absolutely stupid."
The issue was discussed when Jacinda Ardern met her Australian counterpart Scott Morrison in Singapore overnight.
