The boyfriend of Millie Elder-Holmes, daughter of the late Sir Paul Holmes, has been killed in a street brawl in west Auckland.
Police say Connor Morris suffered a head injury when he was attacked with a weapon on Don Buck Road, Massey, around midnight. He died on the way to hospital.
Locals have described scenes of chaos, with people fighting, screaming and shouting and "blood everywhere".
Police say up to 30 people in two large groups clashed. One group was at a party at a house while the other group was at a nearby address.
"We believe that there has been at least one weapon involved," Detective Inspector Greg Cramer said.
Mr Morris, 26, was the long-time boyfriend of Millie Elder-Holmes and both have had run-ins with the law and battled drug addictions.
The couple had been together for six years and were said to living clean. But Mr Morris had connections to the Head Hunters motorcycle gang with his father a member and Connor himself was once a prospect.
Police don't believe last night's fight was gang related and the incident did not occur at a gang address. Mr Cramer said at this early stage they believe it was a random incident and the victim was not specifically targeted.
"The information that has been gathered since early this morning is that a group of people Mr Morris was associated with were walking to a service station to purchase some refreshments, they have walked past a party and an altercation has then taken place and a fight has broken out."
Police want to hear from witnesses to the fight.
Meanwhile family and friends of Mr Morris have taken to social media to express their grief and anger over his death.
