A massive rock threatening to fall on a well-used road was blown up, with the Hurunui District Council capturing the spectacular moment the fractured rock was blown to smithereens.
The rock was the size of several cars, according to the council's Facebook page.
"We like a good explosion as much as anyone but there really was no other way to remove this risky rock. Enjoy – we did," the caption read.
Esk Head Road, which leads to Lake Sumner, is located about two hours north of Christchurch.
