Body of gang member fatally shot in Whanganui is returned to his whānau

The body of Kevin Ratana, 27, was removed from Puriri St yesterday, amid a tribute of red Mongrel Mob bandanas.

The body of a gang member who was shot and killed in Whanganui on Tuesday has been returned to his whānau following a post mortem.

The body of 27-year-old Kevin Ratana was yesterday removed from the scene of the shooting in Puriri Street, Castlecliffe, amid a Mongrel Mob tribute of red bandanas.

Detective Inspector Ross McKay says the investigation into the fatal shooting has continued today.

"Senior gang leaders are working collaboratively with Police and we appreciate the assistance they are providing as we work to identify the person/s responsible for this young man’s death," Mr McKay said today.

A scene examination has been completed, although Puriri Street residents can expect to see a continued police presence in area in the coming days, he said.

A post mortem has also been completed and the victim has been returned to his whānau, Mr McKay said.

The investigation is well-staffed, with extra officers arriving in Whanganui today and tomorrow to assist, he said. 

Mr McKay said as police continue to investigate, they urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious to call Whanganui Police on 06 349 0600.
