January 16, 2020

The man’s kayak was found, but not him, and he’s now been missing for more than 24 hours.

A body has been found in the search for a kayaker who has been missing from Lake Ellesmere since the weekend.

Christchurch man Louis Solofua, 59, never reported back in after he set off in his kayak on Saturday.

His kayak was found that day and on Monday, the police search changed to focusing on finding his body.

Today police say they found a body at around 2pm.

While formal identification is yet to take place, it's believed to be Mr Solofua's.

A karakia has been performed this afternoon by local iwi Te Taumutu Rūnanga, and a rāhui is in place between Greenpark Huts and the Kaitorete Spit.

The death will be referred to the coroner.
