Wellington police have confirmed the body found on a Wairarapa beach yesterday is that of missing 26-year-old woman Sonam Shelar.

Ms Shelar was five-months pregnant and was last seen at home on Cashmere Avenue in the suburb of Khandallah about 8.30am on Saturday.

Police say the post mortem on Ms Shelar's body is now complete, however they are unable to comment further until the results are received.

The 26-year-old moved to New Zealand in April after marrying her husband Sagar Shelar in December.

Family spokesperson Harshal Patkar told the New Zealand Herald Sonam’s mother, who lives in India, collapsed when told about her daughter’s death.

"It might be a murder, that is what I'm saying, that is what her family thinks, especially her mother," Patkar says.

Patkar also said her family ruled out the possibility she would ever harm herself.

Earlier in the week her husband had told NZ Herald that Sonam wanted a boy, but an ultrasound scan was inconclusive and she was upset.

"On November 15 we went for an ultrasound test at the hospital," Mr Shelar said.

"She had always dreamed for a baby boy but that day after the ultrasound they were not sure if it was a girl or boy.

"As soon as we got in the car she was crying and so upset because she wanted a boy." Sonam's family has dismissed this suggestion.

Mr Sagar said the police have searched his home, but was adamant he knew nothing of his wife's death.

"I know that I’m still their first suspect but I know I haven’t done anything wrong."
