NZ Blood Service stresses no urgent need for blood after Christchurch attack

The NZ Blood Service says there is no urgent need for blood in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks, with stocks currently healthy.

“We are not short of blood. There’s been a lot of engagement over the weekend and people wanting to help. We need a constant supply as blood that’s donated can’t be used after 35 days … there’s no shortage,” media spokesperson Asuka Burge said.

Ms Burge said the misinformation may come from A+ and O+ being the most-needed blood types generally.

People who wish to donate can fill in a form that can be found on their website .

The service will post an update on social media if the situation changes.

Since the NZ Blood Service launched its online donor sign-up form on Friday night, 500 people have registered their interest in donating blood after the Christchurch attack. ‘We’ll be contacting those people over the coming weeks about becoming blood donors,’ a spokesperson said.
