Bird lover spots one of NZ's rarest birds - the matuku - in suburban West Auckland

The Australasian bittern, one of New Zealand’s rarest birds, was captured on camera by Dion Pou in Te Atatū.

Few birds are as rare in New Zealand as the matuku, and no bird is less likely to turn up in a built-up area.

But that's what's happened in suburban West Auckland, and it's got bird lovers all a twitter. 

None more so than Dion Pou, the guy who captured the Australasian bittern on camera in Te Atatū.

He told Seven Sharp reporter Tim Wilson it's like finding the Holy Grail.
