Bennett defends National's leader, Simon Bridges, amid rumours of a leadership coup

The National Party leader has been faced with plummeting polls and talks of challenges from the party’s own MPs.

National's Deputy leader Paula Bennett has shut down rumours of a leadership coup.

Talks of Judith Collins challenging Simon Bridges have been circling for months as Mr Bridges popularity continues to plummet in political polls.

But Ms Bennett says, despite the "odd little bumps along the way", MPs are backing the National Party leader.

"If there is one thing that Simon shows me in last 18 months, and I'm probably the person that works most closely with him, he is a man that is competent and intelligent and hard working, and by crikey he is determined and he has shown resilience that I think every New Zealander will see," Ms Bennett said.

"He is most definitely our leader and going to stay that way."

However, New Zealander First MP Shane Jones said he didn't think Mr Bridges was comfortable in his own skin, comparing him to UK's Theresa May.

"I just don't think that he's got what it takes, he's never going to match Jacinda Ardern - she's now one of the most famous politicians that New Zealand has ever seen on a global scale."

He said there was a "virus of treachery alive" in National's own caucus.
