Bankrupt blogger Cameron Slater has been fined tens of thousands of dollars for a calculated character assassination.

That's how the Human Rights Tribunal described a six month concerted campaign by the Whale Oil blogger against businessman Matt Blomfield.

The tribunal ruled Slater must pay Mr Blomfield $70,000 in compensation for severe humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings.

Slater declared voluntary bankruptcy last month.
