Badly-injured penguins find refuge in Wellington Zoo

The yellow eyed penguin population has hit a 25-year low and it seems predators are part of the problem.

Two badly-injured penguins have been sent from the West Coast to Wellington Zoo to recuperate.

The Fiordland Crested penguins are having treatment at the zoo's vet hospital, The Nest.

Gonzo was brought north after suffering a large abdominal wound and breaking a bone in her chest.

"She is healing well and we are hopeful that she will soon be able to be released back onto the West Coast," says senior veterinarian Baukje Lenting.

Harry, meanwhile, has an eye injury, which will hamper his ability to hunt.

"The prognosis is looking better than we first suspected - he is expected to make a full recovery," Ms Lenting said.

Both penguins are eating 600g of fish a day as they regain their strength.

Wellington Zoo has a conservation partnership with West Coast Penguin Trust to save these nationally vulnerable animals in the wild.
