North Auckland woman pinned to house by car, has one of the 'worst' crush injuries seen by crewman

An Auckland woman is in a critical condition after being pinned to a house by a car, with a paramedic saying it was one of the "worst" crush injuries he had seen.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter (AWRH) were called to Puhoi, 50km north of Auckland last night at 5:15pm, NZ Herald reports.

When they arrived, the woman was trapped between a car and a concrete retaining wall of a house for 20 to 30 minutes.

The car had slowly rolled to pin the woman against the house, according to the report.

AWRH attending crewman Greg Brownson said the patient was “really sick” when they arrived.

"I've been in this job for about 36 years and it was one of the worst compound fractures I've seen for a while," Mr Brownson said.

"Her legs were both broken. Bad internal injuries. We don't know exactly what happened but she was crushed between her own car and the retaining wall.

"She was in a huge amount of pain and the doc had given her some quite strong pain relief, but she certainly knew she'd been injured,” he told the New Zealand Herald.

Once the Fire Services had released her she was emergency air-lifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

When she arrived at the hospital, ultrasounds revealed substantial internal bleeding in the abdomen.

Mr Brownson said he believed a child had rung emergency services alerting them to the trapped woman.

“We had the understanding that a child had rung up ambulance. I don't know how old the child was but apparently it was a young person."
