Auckland village of Ihumatao divided over housing development

April 7, 2019

Nearly 500 homes are planned on the Ihumatao site.

Disputes between local Māori are heating up over an Auckland housing development in Ihumatao.

Fletcher Building is planning nearly five hundred homes for the archaeologically significant area on the edge of the Manukau harbour.

"I'm not going to let Rawaho or an outsider like Pania whom I don't even know come into our village and cause disruption," Te Warena Taua, of iwi Te Kawerau ā Maki, told the Marae programme.

Save Our Unique Landscape (SOUL) are a campaign group which has been protesting the development since 2016.

The SOUL group might be fighting a losing battle.

But they're refusing to give up hope -planning to hand over a petition to Auckland Council on Tuesday.
