Auckland urged to be prepared as more strong winds, thunderstorms set to hit region tonight

TVNZ1 Breakfast weatherman Matty McLean has the latest forecast.

Aucklanders are being urged to prepare for more strong winds and thunderstorms which are set to hit the region tonight.

It comes nearly two days after a heavy rain and strong gales pummelled the city causing widespread damage and power outages.

The Auckland Civil Defence says residents should prepare for the incoming weather by securing items on their property, including trees that have been damaged in Tuesday's storm and restock on batteries for torches.

More strong winds and thunderstorms are forecast for Auckland tonight

The city has been left with hundreds of trees blocking roads, crashing into carports and falling onto houses.

Georgina Griffiths from the MetService says tonight's storm will be different with those in eastern and central parts of Auckland unlikely to experience gusts like they did on Tuesday.

However, it will be a wet and windy night for those in the western parts of the city especially those on the west coast beaches with damaging winds expected from 8pm till midnight.

"During the last event, damaging winds were widespread and affected most people. This is not the case tonight – we expect severe winds to be rather localised this time around," says Griffiths.

The clean-up from Tuesday's big storm is still continuing across the city ahead of tonight's weather event with crews removing debris and restoring power throughout the city.

Critics say Aucklanders were left unprepared when the storm hit

Auckland Emergency Management Director John Dragicevich says there is still a large number without power.

"Those without power have now had 36 hours without heating, hot water and other essential services, and will be dealing with food spoilage issues.

The tree has come down in the central suburb of Sandringham.

"We can't emphasise enough how important it is for people to look out for each other and check on neighbours, friends and family that might not be coping under these circumstances, especially those with young children and the elderly.
