The central North Island is also battling freezing temperatures after unusually early snow fall.

Parts of the upper North Island are still recovering from Tuesday night's storm and now the region is preparing for another blast of bad weather including severe winds and thunderstorms.

A MetService severe weather watch for strong gale force winds is in place for Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Coromandel with winds expected to hit from around 9pm today.

TVNZ1 Breakfast weatherman Matty McLean has the latest forecast.

"Westerly winds may rise to severe gale in exposed places for a time Thursday night into the early hours of Friday morning," MetService's severe weather watch reads.

MetService has also issued a Severe Thunderstrom watch effective from 8.45am to midnight.

"A fast-moving front should move over the north of the North Island tonight. The front is expected to bring a period of thunderstorms to Northland, Auckland and Waikato this evening and tonight and these may briefly become severe," MetService's thunderstorm watch reads.

They say there's also a "chance of small tornadoes near the west coast".

There'll be some showers early on in the upper North Island although Auckland and Whitianga will see some fine spells too.

Further south, Southland and Otago residents can expect rain throughout the day and strong winds.
