Auckland taxpayers to pay extra $14.5 million to build America’s Cup village

December 6, 2018

Auckland ratepayers will be forking out an extra $14.5 million to build the America's Cup village.

The Auckland Council has voted in favour of spending the extra cash, after a budget blowout on the estimated cost of building the facility in time for racing in 2021.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says while everyone agrees the blowout is unacceptable, there are benefits for the city and country.

The Government is also increasing its contribution by the same amount.

The Cup Village project will cost $152 million to build on the Auckland waterfront.
