Auckland swelters as temperatures pass 30C in parts, while Taupō tarmac hot enough to cook an egg on at over 60C

Temperatures continue to soar around the country as a heatwave that arrived from Australia pushed temperatures over 30C in Auckland and left the tarmac hot enough to cook an egg in parts of Taupō.

According to 1 NEWS meterologist Dan Corbett, temperatures in Auckland are "five to six degrees" above average for this time of year.

An official reading from Whenuapai Airport recorded temperatures hovering just over 30C between 3pm and 4pm this afternoon.

Unofficial readings provided by members of the public to MetService saw many places in Auckland comfortably over the 30C mark, with a temperature of 35C recorded in Forrest Hill on the North Shore.

Data from the NZ Transport Agency also showed tarmac reaching astonishing temperatures on roads around Lake Taupō with one road reaching over 60C.

The hottest officially recorded temperatures around the country at 4pm today saw Kawerau, Bay of Plenty at 34C, Wainuiomata in Wellington 33.5C, Taumarunui 33.2C .

The hot weather is expected to last until at least Friday.
