Auckland set for weekend drenching as fronts slam the country

1 NEWS' weather presenter Dan Corbett gives the latest update.

Auckland is set to get the first of several spells of rain forecast for this weekend as several fronts move across the region.

MetService predicts periods of rain and northerlies in the area today and again tomorrow, when the rain will be heavy at times from late afternoon.

Periods of rain are forecast to continue on Sunday, gradually clearing on Monday, with the wind easing.

The forecaster says a low is about to move over the South Island and cloud, if not rain, has already pushed onto most of New Zealand ahead of it.

The rain is not expected to be persistent, especially for those south of the central plateau where some sunny spells are forecast, MetService said this afternoon.

But those who're intending to head out should pick their time as no one will escape a dose of the rain from the second low pressure system which pushed into our waters last Sunday.

Heavy rain watches and warnings have been issued for a large portion of the upper North Island, excluding Auckland, most in force from late Saturday evening.

Due to some uncertainty in the movement of the second low it's likely details on the current warnings will change slightly, MetService says.
