Long Bay College’s Baking Boys are getting a taste of business success

A group of students at an Auckland college have achieved early business success with a baking product spawned from their business studies course.

TVNZ1's Seven Sharp reports the Year 13 students at Long Bay College have registered their business, The Bays Baking Company.

The boys, all friends, have created mixtures of locally sourced ingredients for cookies, including chocolate, sugar and flour, and sell the product in jars.

"This product cuts the amount of time it takes to bake. And there's no waste. It's more accessible for people who want to bake and don't have the time," said Josh,  one of the boys.

It was developed for an NCEA level three assessment.

The boys' business studies teacher, Te Mahia Millanta, says they've grown the business during the year.

"They've bought things as the year progressed - a van, merchandise, even seen that take off," she said.

"It's actually worked out brilliantly, far better than I ever thought."

And the community has risen to support them.

"Every mum of our friends has bought our jars," said Rueben, another of the baking boys.
