Auckland police issue appeal for clues as large-scale search for missing fisherman continues

January 8, 2019

A large-scale search for a missing fisherman at Bethells Beach is continuing, with Search and Rescue teams, life guards and the police helicopter involved in efforts to find him.

Korean man Myung Kang went missing at the beach on Saturday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Callum McNeill said Mr Kang's family became concerned that he hadn’t come home from his fishing trip and reported him missing to police late on Sunday night.

Police immediately commenced searching for Mr Kang and his vehicle, Mr McNeill said.

The 57-year-old’s white 2011 Toyota Prius has since been found in the Bethells Beach carpark.

Mr McNeill urged anyone who may have seen Mr Kang to contact police.

“Saturday was a hot day and a large number of people took the opportunity to spend some time at Bethells Beach, so we are hopeful that someone has seen Mr Kang with his fishing gear,” McNeill said.

“We are appealing to the public to come forward with any sightings of Mr Kang.

“Police appreciate that this is a very difficult and worrying time for Mr Kang’s family and we are providing them with support.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Waitemata Police on 09 839 0697.
