Auckland pet owners' animals blessed by church ministers

Despite a mass powercut in central Auckland today, hundreds of people gathered with placards in support of endangered animals and to have their pets blessed.

Each year SPCA Auckland celebrates the life of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, by providing the opportunity to have a pet blessed by the ministers at St Matthews-in-the-City.

A march was also planned from Queen Elizabeth II Square to Queen Street to raise awareness for endangered animals, but was cancelled at the request of police due to a power outage that is affecting thousands of homes, businesses and traffic lights.
