Auckland motorways heaving as the great Easter exodus gets underway, with traffic in other regions also ramping up

March 29, 2018

Traffic is heavy and congested on Auckland motorways as people head away for the Easter long weekend, and it's a similar story for main highways around the country.

Auckland's Northern, Southern and Northwestern motorways all have heavy traffic or heavy patches, the NZ Transport Agency reports.

The Southwestern Motorway, the main route to Auckland Airport, is slow in parts due to an earlier breakdown which is now clear.

State Highway One north of Auckland is busy at Puhoi, with NZTA saying traffic will remain heavy in the area until 9.30 tonight and again tomorrow.

In the Wellington region, there are delays of up to 30 minutes on SH1 from Plimmerton to Otaki due to holiday congestion.

And in South Canterbury, a car rolling and blocking lanes at Washdyke on SH1 just before 2pm means Dunedin-bound traffic has been detoured around the crash site.

NZTA says traffic is very heavy on SH1 with Ed Sheeran Dunedin-bound traffic making the journey reasonably slow.

Two separate crashes at Telegraph Road, Burnham, earlier today also created bottlenecks for southbound traffic just south of Christchurch.

Police are enforcing a four kilometre-per-hour speed tolerance over the long weekend from 4pm today and are appealing to drivers to be cautious and courteous to avoid accidents.

Just after 6am this morning two cars collided head on along SH1 just north of Amberley, killing two and injuring three others.

Last Easter two people died on New Zealand roads. But by yesterday, 100 people had already lost their lives in crashes this year, 16 more than for the same period last year, and this morning's crash adds two more deaths to the toll.

Police say their focus is on ensuring people are driving safely and to the conditions.

The Warbirds Over Wanaka air show over the long weekend will also contribute to increased traffic on highways in southern areas.
