Auckland man jailed for 'senseless, unprovoked' attack that left young father without eye

April 9, 2019

An Auckland man has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison following a "senseless and unprovoked" attack on a man outside a bar which resulted in him losing an eye.

Sione Moala was found guilty in the Auckland High Court today of wounding with intent to injure and fighting in a public place in the April 2016 incident, police said.

The victim had been outside a central Auckland bar when he was approached by Moala, who was unknown to him, and seriously assaulted.

The victim was left with life-changing injuries following the incident.

"The victim, a father of a young child, has now lost an eye and his life will never been the same again," Senior Sergeant Mark Clayton said.

"He has been through a significant amount of trauma, both physical and emotional, as a result of this random, cowardly attack.

"This behaviour and such public place violence is unacceptable and can cause such immense harm to people and their families."

Moala will not be eligible for parole.
