Auckland experiences its wettest December hour on record

December 4, 2018

The Stanmore Bay home has lost power as large swaths of New Zealand remain under a thunderstorm watch today.

Auckland has just had the wettest December hour on record today, according to NIWA.

Auckland received 31.4mm of rain in just one hour.  It was also the second wettest summer hour on record, only surpassed by a wetter hour on January 8, 1975.

Paul Morgan in Stanmore Bay recorded as the thunderstorm battered the area.

The rain record comes as 130 lightning strikes in five minutes were recorded this morning causing flights to be delayed at Auckland Airport.

Power outages have been experienced across the city.
