Auckland Council website crashed under 1000% increase in demand

Auckland Council's website is still experiencing problems after it crashed yesterday under the huge demand of people seeking the new value of their homes.

The website was hit by a 1,000% increase in page views yesterday with the normal daily figure of between 80,000 to 90,000 soaring to close to one million.

Acting chief finance officer Kevin Ramsay says the council apologises for the ongoing problem as ratepayers wait to find their 2014 property revaluations online.

"IT staff are working long hours to try to make the site more stable and resolve any of the technical issues involved and we apologise for the inconvenience," he said.

Homeowners should get their new valuations in the mail by next week.

For those who are still unable to check their valuations online the council has released some key facts.

Council property valuations - key facts:

Property valuations help determine the share of rates people pay but have no impact on the amount of rates money the council collects.

This year's property revaluation showed an average capital value increase of 29 percent since 2011.

The average residential capital value increase was 34.8 percent.

All property owners will also receive a notice in the mail in mid-November.

All property owners have the right to object to their values and the objections process is now open.
