Auckland Council pours cold water on speedway's fireworks show

Auckland Council has reneged on a permit allowing an event at Vodafone Springs Speedway to let off fireworks for Guy Fawkes, leaving the promoter disappointed.

Western Springs Speedway posted on its Facebook page about the cancellation.

"After several discussions and email confirmations, the RFA have now elected to place restrictions that are unachievable which unfortunately no means we can no longer have the Pyro Display," they wrote.

The Speedway season-opener is popular with families and promoter Greg Mosen told the NZ Herald that they had met all requirements, and had received confirmation - only to have it taken away when they were informed the height limit had been lowered.

"We first approached the RFA in April of this year, in late October the RFA told us that this would comply, then today we are told that this isn’t the situation," Mr Mosen wrote.

"To be told 48 hours ahead of the proposed night is unacceptable.

"We have sold over 1000 tickets to Opening Night with an expected audience of around 10,000 on the night."

The NZ Herald reported that the height limit for firework explosions was previously 30m, but had been lowered to 25m, meaning the fireworks planned for the event were now too high, and the permit was cancelled.

"The frustration is that we are now going to spend 48 hours trying to unravel what we've spent the last four months putting together ... it is immensely frustrating," Mr Mosen told the Herald.

RFA was also concerned about the animals at Auckland Zoo, which is adjacent to the speedway, but Ms Mosen dismissed those concerns.

"It will have zero impact on the zoo - in fact it is less than what we did last year," Mr Mosen said.
