A street in the Auckland CBD has been closed as fire crews battle a blaze at AUT University.

Mayoral Dr between Wakefield St and Wellesley St East is blocked due to an incident, Auckland Transport wrote on Twitter.

'Please follow the directions of emergency services on site and avoid the area," the tweet continued.

Videos and photos on social media showed the cladding on the building on fire, with one fire crew using a ladder to combat the blaze.

"Outter cladding catching fire really quick," Tim McCready wrote on Twitter.
