Atiamuri families 'don't feel safe' following series of horror crashes

A woman says 15 people have lost their lives in the last six months on roads outside her farm.

Families in the south Waikato town of Atiamuri say they don't feel safe, after a horror car crash over the weekend.

A head-on collision that killed eight people on Sunday is the latest in a string of fatal accidents that have occurred near Chloe Walker's farm.

"I take my children to kindergarten on that road every day, and you don't feel safe," Ms Walker told 1 NEWS.

Since November last year, 15 people have died in the immediate area.

That includes two people in separate crashes outside the Bull Ring cafe.

Five more people died on nearby Tirohanga Road at the start of April.

"My daughter, who's four, hears about these accidents that have happened.

"The last one was just down the road from her kindy, and she now hears about an accident and says, 'How many people have died, Mum?'

"We shouldn't be having those kind of questions with our children."

In a statement, NZTA said it was looking at a "range of possible options" for the 100km stretch of SH1 Between Piarere and Taupo.
