Ashburton mayor Donna Favel talks to Breakfast about the kinds of jobs available.

Ashburton employers are struggling to find workers, with 500 jobs available in the mid-Canterbury town.

Just 1.9 percent of residents don't have jobs in the town.

Ashburton mayor Donna Favel says there has been an ongoing trend where potential employees in their late teens and early 20 leave.

"They go off and do tertiary study or they do their big OE."

She said there are jobs avaliable in a lot of areas.

"Dairy workers, truck drivers, GPs, teachers, police and production line workers."

As well as good jobs, there were plenty of fun things to do in the area.

"It has New Zealand's top ski field (Mt Hutt), sport and recreation and a friendly and welcoming community."
