Art from across New Zealand and the Pacific showcased in new Auckland exhibit

The Auckland Art Fair is getting underway from today.

Art from right across New Zealand and the Pacific goes on show in Auckland today as part of the Auckland Art Fair.

The five-day event at waterfront venue, the Cloud, features work from more than 150 artists and 41 galleries.

While the pieces mainly come from within New Zealand, international galleries such as the Leo Gallery from Shanghai and Hong Kong, Fine Arts Sydney and the Bergman Gallery in Rarotonga have spaces, too.

Fine Arts Sydney Director Ryan Moore told 1 NEWS, "There's a really interesting moment where artists and galleries and institutions are connecting with one another and internationally."

Auckland Art Fair co-director Stephanie Post estimates around $7 million of art was sold as a result of the 2018 fair.

But the event's not just for those looking to spend.

Ms Post said, "We've also got a bookshop, we've also got a talks programme, there's a reading room, lots of artists are doing talks on the stand… so there's a lot going on."

Ten thousand people are expected to file through the fair before it closes on Sunday and, due to growing interest, the event will now be annual.
