Arrests made during Rugby League fan celebration on the streets of South Auckland

With a few arrests made, police say overall they were pleased by the good crowds.

Police say 29 people were arrested last night in South Auckland during street celebrations after the Tongan team's 32-18 win over Samoa .

Police presence was strong in South Auckland as Tongan fans ran through the streets of Otara and hang from car windows following their team's triumphant win.

Hundreds of fans turned out for the street celebration tooting car horns, dancing, waving flags and lighting fireworks. 

Police told 1 NEWS 29 people were arrested in Otahuhu by police for disorderly behaviour.

In Hamilton, where the team played last night, three people were arrested for pitch invasion and one for assaulting a security guard.

Twenty people were evicted from Waikato Stadium by police and security for intoxication or bringing in prohibited items.

However, Waikato police say the majority of the crowd was largely well behaved and caused few issues for police following the match.

"The boisterous and vocal crowd created a great atmosphere and there were few incidents of concern to police," says Waikato District RLWC Operations Commander Inspector Karen Henrikson.
