Around two-thirds of e-cigarette users still smoke tobacco

It’s promoted calls for it to be made clear vaping should be used as a way to quit smoking tobacco, and not as an addition.

A report has found that two thirds of e-cigarette users in New Zealand still smoke tobacco cigarettes.

A survey by New Zealand’s Health Promotion Agency into the use of e-cigarettes among current and ex-smokers found most respondents indicated they used a device containing nicotine.

Respondents to the health and lifestyles survey who were 45 years and older were also twice as likely to be dual users than those aged 15-34 years.

Half of the respondents believed e-cigarettes were less harmful compared with cigarettes and one quarter said they did not know.

It’s promoted calls for it to be made clear that vaping should only be used as a way to quit smoking tobacco and not as an addition.

The report stated that while the long-term effects of e-cigarettes are not yet known, it is widely agreed that e-cigarettes are far less harmful to health than smoked tobacco.
