Areas searched as investigation into death of miniature horse near Dunedin continues

April 3, 2019

Dunedin Police Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen spoke to reporters today.

Police say they still have a team working on the case in which a miniature horse was stabbed to death near Dunedin nearly two months ago.

Star was brutally stabbed 41 times  on February 17. The attack happened near the corner of Brown and Pitt Streets in Waitati.

Dunedin police carried out a search of areas of interest in Waitati last week, including the paddock and surrounds where the pony was fenced in the night it was attacked.

Police did not respond to questions about if they have any leads to link anyone or any group to the attack, but earlier said it was believed more than one person carried out the attack.

The day before he died, veterinarians were optimistic about Star's chances of recovery.

Despite a five-hour surgery to try and save the animal, one of the stab wounds punctured the horse's bowel and the 10-year-old equine died.

Star was stabbed 41 near times in his paddock near Dunedin.

"Subsequent vet assessment has revealed the injuries to the horse appear to have been caused by a blade or similar," police said at the time.

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact police.
