Anglican Bishop of Christchurch Victoria Matthews resigns

Bishop Victoria Matthews sits down with Seven Sharp to explain why Christchurch Cathedral's future is still uncertain after six years.

The Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, has resigned after 10 years in the role.

Much of her time leading the Diocese of Christchurch has been dominated by the debate over the future of Christchurch's quake-damaged Cathedral.

She originally supported demolishing it to build a contemporary replacement, butt now says she's happy it'll be restored, following last September's synod vote.

"I am happy the Cathedral reinstatement is going ahead. I am particularly pleased we opted to put restoration of our relationship with the wider community in first place," Ms Matthews said in a statement this afternoon.

Ms Matthews says she's not retiring, nor in ill health, and will now take some time to decide what to do next.

She will step down on May 1 and Archbishop Philip Richardson will become acting Bishop while a new bishop is elected.
