Analysis: 'These talks are proving far more complex'– 1 NEWS' Corin Dann on ongoing NZ First talks

October 17, 2017

Winston Peters said today the party had made lots of progress on policy, but needs to speak with Labour and National once again.

The coalition negotiation process is proving to be far more complex and frustrating than first thought, according to 1 NEWS political editor Corin Dann.

After another day has slipped by with no firm decision coming from Winston Peters and the NZ First camp, the wait to find out the make-up of the next government is dragging on longer than anyone expected.

"These talks are proving far more complex, frustrating I would say than people had imagined. We now know that the board was almost able to reach a consensus on the policy platforms, one from National and one from Labour, Winston Peters said they got about 98 per cent there," Dann said.

"But they need further discussions with the leaders of both Labour and National over things such as ministerial positions and how the government would be made up in terms of whether it's a coalition or whether it's a support and confidence deal."

The NZ First board has been sent home and Mr Peters says he will conclude talks with them via phone once he has ironed out the final details with Labour and National.

However, Dann says the fact that National, Labour and the Greens, will still have to meet with their respective boards and caucus means we may yet have another day or two to wait for a final decision.
