Ammonia leak causes staff to be evacuated from Affco freezing works near Te Puke

Two people needed treatment after the leak at Affco's Rangiuru freezing works.

A fire spokesperson has confirmed to 1 NEWS that an ammonia leak has led to evacuations at the Affco freezing works in Rangiuru, near Te Puke this afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 1.03pm.

Footage taken by 1 NEWS shows all staff have been evacuated from the area.

Two people have breathed in the poisonous gas and are being treated in a stable condition.

Five fire appliances attended the incident.

The fire spokesperson said “the leak has been isolated” and crews are currently waiting for the ammonia to dissipate.
