August 20, 2018

Police say a 28-year-old American woman living in New Zealand who died yesterday near Whitianga reportedly fell more than 120m in a fatla "climbing incident".

Police were called to the scene at Castle Rock in Coromandel about 10am and the woman died at the scene.

Waikato Police are now working with the United States Consulate, who are in touch with the woman's family and the Coroner's office.

Police said they are making inquiries to understand the circumstances of the woman's death.

Stuff reports police have spoken to the woman's climbing partner.

Castle Rock is popular with climbers and many of the climbing routes are bolted with anchor points for climbers to use.
