A large American bomber plane reminiscent of the Cold War era will take to the skies for the Wings Over Wairarapa airshow next week.

The Boeing B-52 Stratfortress Bomber is expected to fly over Masterton's Hood Aerodrome on February 23 to open the day's events - the first time such an aircraft has entered New Zealand airspace, Stuff reports.

"If you want power, noise, the ground-shaking type of experience, then the B-52 will give that to you in spades," Wings Over Wairarapa chairman Bob Francis told the media outlet.

The military plane, which will fly from a US air base in Guam to Australia, is not expected to land on the aerodrome's runway due to its weight.

Wings Over Wairarapa, a three-day event held every two years, will celebrate its 20th year this year.
