Air New Zealand is set to trial a new service between Invercargill and Auckland using its A320 jet aircraft.
Tickets will go on sale in January 2019 - dates for the service are yet to be announced.
The two-hour domestic flight will become the longest service in the country.
Air New Zealand Head of Regional Affairs, Reuben Levermore says the service has been an important issue for the Southland community.
"The challenge will be for the community to support the trial of a direct service to ensure it's sustainable and we're confident they'll do so."
The airline has come under fire from Regional Development Minister Shane Jones for axing some regional services.
