More than 600 flights will take place today and there may be some delays.

Air New Zealand have issued refunds to passengers of a flight from Christchurch to Invercargill on Wednesday, after severe turbulence from winds of up to 180 km/h reportedly left many on board vomiting.

During the trip , Air NZ flight NZ5715 was battered by constant high winds.

Speaking to the NZ Herald, passenger Owen Scott spoke of the disorientating experience that the turbulence bought to what would otherwise be a relatively peaceful flight.

"It was just about nonstop. We had a 10-minute respite, and then it hit us again," he said.

"It was one of those trips which, hopefully, was once in a lifetime."

Stuff was told by one passenger that around 20 per cent of passengers on the flight vomited.

An Air New Zealand spokesperson confirmed that the flight made a safe landing in Invercargill, with emergency services on hand to treat those with any discomforts.

Customers on board the flight have been offered a full refund, as well as the option of attending a debrief with flight crew.
