Air New Zealand engineers call off Christmas strike

Three days of Christmas strike action by Air New Zealand engineers that could have affected 120,000 air travellers has been called off.

Air New Zealand engineers had threatened to strike for three days, beginning on December 21.

Talks concluded at 10pm last night and E tū union members say their core aims have largely been achieved, E tū said in a statement.

However, specifc details about the offer will not be made public until union members have been briefed.

E tū head of aviation, Savage, said travellers will be relieved the strike action has been called off.

"While the process has been tense at times, it is a much improved offer from where we started and maintains standards in Aviation. I want to acknowledge the union negotiating teams, especially the delegates, for getting us to this point," Savage said.

"Air New Zealand and the four employee unions have a union management partnership. We still disagree - sometimes publicly - but at the heart of that partnership is a commitment to keep working on solutions and maintain productive communication with each other. We have witnessed that this week."

The airline says it's pleased to reach an agreement with union members, who will now vote on a revised offer.
