Aerial footage shows extent of major fire near Nelson, ripping through forestry plantation

Some people have been forced to leave their homes evacuated due to the fire near Wakefield.

As a bush fire covering 120 hectares rages near Nelson, 1 NEWS has filmed the blaze from above.

Footage shot from a helicopter shows the fire raging in a pine forest plantation near Wakefield. Thick smoke billows from the fire.

The fire has forced the evacuation of some properties and a Civil Defence Evacuation centre has been set up.
