Dozens of homes along the Heathcote River are prone to repeated flooding, made worse since the quakes.

Heated scene broke out in Christchurch today as the city council presented possible solutions to residents in a notorious flooding zone.

Dozens of homes along the Heathcote River are prone to repeated flooding, a problem made worse since the region's earthquakes.

Several options were put to homeowners including one which could see the council buy the properties or raise them higher.

But not everyone was impressed with what was on offer.

"I think it should have been started a long time ago," one resident said at the meeting.

Another said the response has always been "very slow and we’d just like everything to speed up".

It wasn't all negative though.

"It's going to take a while to get the head around it but the answers are being addressed in a very sensible way," another resident said after hearing the plans.

The options, including stopbanks and dredging, will be put to city councillors for a decision next month.
