'Ability to ban foreign buyers buying existing homes' top priority, says new PM

Ms Ardern was flanked by her new Government Ministers and cheered on by an adoring crowd.

Speaking to media after her historic first public address as New Zealand Prime Minster, Jacinda Ardern has stated the new Government's top priority will be to ban foreign buyers from buying existing homes in the Kiwi housing market.

When asked about her negotiation tactics for the TPP agreement as she heads to APEC in Vietnam mid-November, Ms Ardern was quick to bring up the foreign buyers ban.

"Our priority, regardless of whether it's TPP or any other agreement, is making sure we have the ability to ban foreign buyers from buying existing New Zealand homes.

"That remains our priority and we've already started that work, of course needing to make sure we have got our negotiating position clear for TPP 11 as well," she said.

The Prime Minister also stated that her Cabinet would be meeting next Tuesday and would be revealing their full 100 day plan shortly after.

The release of this plan may well mean the Government will need to release a "mini-budget" in the near future, she said.

Ms Ardern wouldn't be drawn on a definite time-line for the mini-budget, saying it still may not be required.
