‘I want to see an end to rodeo, pure and simple’ - SAFE renews call to ban rodeos after horse dies at Canterbury event

March 11, 2019

This follows the death of a participating horse at the Rodeo National Finals in North Canterbury.

SAFE renews its call to ban rodeos after a horse was put down following an accident at the Rodeo National Finals in North Canterbury this weekend.

Save Animals from Exploitation's (SAFE) Marianne Macdonald told TVNZ1's Breakfast this is the fourth animal death at the rodeo this season and she wants to "see an end to rodeo, pure and simple".

“We were there at the weekend protesting outside the finals of the rodeo and to actually see another animal killed, just put even more of a negative spin on what is animal abuse for entertainment.”

She says the animal activist group are pushing the Government for action as the Labour Party made promises prior to the election that she says they have not followed through on.

"It’s 2019, 18 months after the Government made those promises and still nothing has been done.

“They chase these baby animals as young as three months old and drag them to a sudden halt with a choking rope around their neck and throw them to the ground, Labour promised to get rid of this," she says.

"They also promised to get rid of things called flank straps that are wretched tight around the sensitive hiding quarters of horses and bulls just before they’re forced into the ring to make them buck wildly and they wanted to get rid of electric prodding and tail twisting to make these animals perform. These things are just totally unacceptable.”

Ms Macdonald says the only way we can get rid of this sort of bullying of animals is for the Government to take it to Parliament as a government sponsored bill.
