A Christchurch man says he was shocked by the pace of ice retreat at Franz Josef Glacier after capturing stunning footage of the area by drone.
Pete Perrim's hobby is aerial photography and videography, so last week travelled to the south Westland tourist destination with his partner.
Using a DJI Phantom drone with attached GoPro, he captured the dramatic landscape that draws hundreds of thousands of travellers a year, and says he was amazed by the amount of retreat since he last visited 20 years ago.
"I was absolutely blown away by how much it's receded," he said.
"For anyone who hasn't been up there for a few years, it's a different landscape."
Between 1983 and 2008 the glacier advanced around 1.5km after heavy snowfall, but has since been going in reverse.
