Wellington's Cuba Dupa Festival moving indoors after Christchurch terrorist attack

March 26, 2019

Usually the festival is held in Cuba Mall but in the wake of the terrorist attack it will be taken indoors.

Organisers of a multi-cultural Wellington festival are scrambling to find new venues for this weekend.

The Cuba Dupa Festival is usually held in Cuba Mall but after the Christchurch terrorist attack it will now be held inside.

"We've taken it inside, and yes it changes the nature of the vent, but we believe it'll allow us to provide the security that's necessary," Artistic Director Drew James told Seven Sharp.

The 19-hour festival is a massive event on the capital's calendar, attracting around 100,000 people.

"Cuba Dupa is a huge event that takes over the whole inner-city area so it's hard to secure," Mr James said.

He says the show will still be "spectacular and free" despite the need for a venue change.
