Watch: Stan Walker's first slow steps after getting stomach removed - 'Man I didn't think it was going to hurt this much'

Kiwi singer Stan Walker has been filmed taking his first steps after having his stomach removed.

Walker underwent the stomach removal surgery because the first stages of cancer were detected in the organ.

He also had a history of the mutation of CDH1 gene, a mutation that causes stomach cancer. Walker's maternal grandfather died from a similar operation in 1999.

The moment was recorded on camera in the TV3 documentary called Stan.

"Man I didn't think it was going to hurt this much," Walker said as he clutched his stomach after making his first steps in hospital.

"Last night was the first night I got emotional because, oh my gosh, I'm getting the same operation that my koroua (grandfather) did," Walker said.

"It's quite hard now because I didn't really think about it for a while, but he used his body as like a guinea pig really, to be honest."

The former Australian Idol winner also admits fearing ever being able to sing again following the surgery.

"If it affects my singing then you know that's when I get a little scared," Walker said.
