Broadcaster Toni Street has taken to social media to share the news that her son, born via a surrogate, is now legally hers.

Lachlan Stephen France was born in August to surrogate Sophie Braggins. Despite the baby being biologically Toni and her husband Matt’s, they still had to go through a process to legally adopt Lachlan.

Street posted a photo on Instagram today, thanking Judge Druce and lawyer Zandra Wackenier for making the process "less daunting" for them.

"Super special day for our family... Lachlan Stephen France has had his morning in court and is now legally our son! Big thank you to Judge Druce & our lawyer Zandra Wackenier for being so warm & making the process less daunting.. but most of all thank you sophiebraggins & michaelbraggins for this precious gift”

Street hashtaged the Instagram post #bestchristmasgiftever.

In August Street spoke about the birth of Lachlan (Lachie) to her The Hits co-hosts Sarah Gandy and Sam Wallace.

In September Street wrote in an Instagram post that she had signed a change.org petition for the New Zealand Adoption Act to be updated.

"It is incredibly hard for loving parents to adopt in this country and our vulnerable children deserve better," she wrote.
