Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok smashes box office charts on opening weekend

October 30, 2017

Waititi walked the red carpet in Sydney last night, amused by how many Kiwi references he's been able to crowbar in.

Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok has had an outstanding opening weekend at global box offices, topping the charts in terms of takings.

Variety reports the Disney-Marvel film took in US$107.6 million (NZ$156.31 million) at the weekend - which in many markets was the best opening weekend ever for a film released in October.

The film is a who's-who of Hollywood A-listers, with stars including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.

It is expected to accelerate even further once it opens in the US market.

The Kiwi director told Kimberlee Downs it was one of the most egoless shoot he’s ever worked on.

The Kiwi connection in the form of Waititi's direction has already boosted anticipated for the film in New Zealand, but box office figures are not yet available.
